Canadian Citizenship Fee Increase Takes Effect

As of midnight on March 31, 2025, the right of citizenship fee for adult applicants has officially gone up.

Anyone submitting a Canadian citizenship application on or after this date will now be required to pay $119.75 for the right of citizenship.

However, individuals who submitted a complete online application before the March 31 deadline—and paid the previous $100 fee—are not impacted by the new pricing. Paper-based applications submitted prior to the cutoff may still be asked to cover the $19.75 difference.

Who Does This Apply To?

Permanent residents who are 18 or older must pay two separate fees when applying for Canadian citizenship:

  • Processing fee: $530
  • Right of citizenship fee: $119.75 (as of March 31)

This brings the total cost for adult applicants to $649.75, up from the prior total of $630.

The increased fee also applies to stateless individuals born to Canadian parents.

Applicants under 18 (minors) are still only required to pay the $100 processing fee, which has not been modified.

Naturalization Process: Becoming a Canadian Citizen

To become a citizen through naturalization, individuals must meet the following eligibility standards outlined in the Canadian Citizenship Act:

  • Hold permanent resident status;
  • Have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days over the last five years;
  • Submit tax filings, if legally obligated, during that five-year span;
  • Pass the citizenship test (for applicants aged 18 to 54); and
  • Demonstrate language skills in English or French at a CLB level 4 or higher.

Minors are exempt from the physical presence condition.

Citizenship is granted during an in-person or virtual ceremony, where those 14 and older must take the oath of citizenship.

A citizenship eligibility calculator is available on CanadaVisa to help determine if permanent residents qualify.

At the time this article was written, citizenship application processing times are estimated at roughly eight months.
